Be
Sure to Recycle Your Fluorescent LampsIt's the Law!
For decades, fluorescent lamps containing mercury have ended
up in our wells, rivers, streams, lakes, and food chain. The
EPA has ruled that companies are now responsible for recycling
fluorescent lamps and other products containing mercury. Businesses
are required by Iowa law to treat fluorescent bulbs as hazardous
waste. Even if your fluorescent tubes have green end caps,
or are low-mercury, they still contain mercury and must be
recycled.

Geoexchange - Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP)
Recently, Muscatine Power and Water (MP&W) increased its energy saving incentive program to include larger rebates for residents and business owners who install Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) or geoexchange heating units.
Geoexchange heating/cooling uses the earth's geothermal heat. In the winter, it transfers usable heat from the ground or groundwater into the home. In the summer, it cools by reversing the process.
Homeowners who install a ground source heat pump enjoy 30% to 60% lower utility bills, lower maintenance costs and higher levels of comfort, year-round. Even though the cost of installation is greater for GSHP, the return on the investment can be realized within 5-10 years.
MP&W's GSHP incentive helps defray some of the cost of installation making geoexchange energy a more economical heating choice. Consider a home with a calculated load 24,000 BTUs cooling and 50,000 BTUs heating. For a two speed system the maximum installed tonnage allowed would be four tons. MP&W's incentive is $300 per ton for 2-stage units and $150 per ton for 1-stage units.(for residential and commercial closed loop systems)
For more information on Ground Source Heat Pumps and rebates call MP&W's Energy Services Advisor, John Root at 563-262-3354.
